Choose the right material, form and pack

A familiar herb name is only the start. Before ordering a raw herb, gum, resin or mineral, match the material identity, the part supplied, the form and the intended preparation. Natural pieces and powder can suit different preparations; they should not be treated as interchangeable with extracts, capsules, fresh produce or prepared medicines.

1. Start with identity and the part

Read the botanical or material name on the product page. Regional and trade names can overlap across plants. Root, bark, leaf, fruit, seed, gum and mineral are different materials even when a common name sounds similar. Where a listing explains an unresolved source or species, ask for clarification before choosing it for your use.

2. Choose Natural or Powder

Natural usually describes the pieces supplied in that listing; check its description and photographs rather than assuming a whole plant. Powder describes a ground form. Neither name alone confirms grade, particle size, extraction strength, purity or suitability for ingestion. Photographs may show only one form, so use the variant selector to confirm what you are buying.

3. Select the exact size

Choose the form and weight together. The selected variant displays its current price and availability; these may differ between forms and sizes. A pack weight is the quantity being sold, not a recommended daily dose or course length.

4. Ask for evidence that matters to your use

Check the pack label, expiry and instructions. If botanical source, food grade, contaminants or a batch test are essential to your intended preparation, ask for current documents for that material and lot. A traditional reference, photograph or common name is not a laboratory certificate. Published information about a species does not establish the composition of a particular pack.

5. Preparation and precautions

Use a preparation appropriate to the material and label. Raw powders are not automatically equivalent to extracts, and dried fruit is not fresh juice. This guide does not prescribe medicinal doses or promise treatment of illness. For medicinal use, pregnancy, breastfeeding, regular medication or a medical condition, seek qualified guidance. For a new external preparation, patch-test first, avoid eyes and broken skin, and stop if irritation occurs.

6. Storage

Keep materials tightly closed in a cool, dry place, protect them from moisture and follow the pack label. Use a clean, dry utensil. Check expiry and any material-specific instructions rather than assuming one shelf life applies to all herbs, gums and resins.
